About this deal

This allows you to get a great price on a carbon fiber cage mounted to the frame, though it is not especially secure or durable. Reasonably Decent A 500ml round bottle is very common especially in triathlon events where you may get a bottle handup from an aid station. A smaller bottle like this can also be placed in multiple locations around the bike. In this test we found that the worst place to keep a 500ml round bottle was one of the more convenient: on the downtube! This cost 5.0w at 40kph, or 2.1w at 30kph. Over an Ironman bike leg at 5hr30min speed (32.7kph) this would be a 2min5sec penalty. Arguably the best quality of the Gorilla XT is the fact that it is made of carbon fiber, though this comes with some caveats too. Carbon fiber is great for hydration cages because not only is it incredibly lightweight, but it is also incredibly strong for its weight.

Because of this, we recommend that you use the Speedfil as a practice hydration system rather than for competition. The other issue is that this is a fairly heavy rear mount which will inherently increase your racing time. However, this is still the best budget rear mount that we saw with plenty of options. However You Want For most people, there is no point in buying an aero bottle. It only provides a marginal gain while making hydration more complicated. It can even prevent you from refilling. If you are a fast cyclist (25mph or 40km/h average speed) it can give the extra gain you need to cross the finish line first! The biggest difference between the Mini Wing 105 and most of XLAB’s other rear mounted hydration systems comes down to materials. It can also be mounted in a variety of arrangements, though this hydration does not come with a cage. Rear Hydration Systems Finally, this hydration system maximizes its design with an aerodynamic profile as well as a non-slip grip. This hydration system also features an aerodynamic profile with a slip-free design so you do not have to worry about slowing down. This is also one of the larger frame mounted systems with a capacity of 24 oz and a bottle made of BPA-free plastic. A 900ml round bottle is often used when an athlete is looking to be self supported, keeping all their own hydration on the bike. In all cases it was slower than the 500ml bottle, and was particularly slow on the downtube, costing a huge 8.2w at 40kph, and 3.5w at 30kph! Out of all the options tested this was the worst, adding up to 3min20sec over an IM bike leg.

Let’s dig into the details. We will focus on the aerodynamic gains given by aero bottles but also by looking at different options for positioning the water bottles. We will see how much time you can gain and how many watts it can save. I will also review the regulations for triathlon and also for UCI road races about aero bottles. And finally, I will give you my honest opinion about buying aero bottles. How aerodynamic is a water bottle?

With the overwhelming number of triathlon hydration systems designed to provide around 20 to 24 oz, the fact that the FC System offers a 35 oz model is a significant upgrade. Rear – This is the original mounting position for bike fueling systems and is almost always a cage type of hydration system. This is mostly due to the fact that snaking a feeder tube along the entire length of the bike is not an efficient design.

One of the more frustrating qualities of a front mounted torpedo position hydration system is that the feeder tube never wants to stay put.The Speedfil might be a more budget-friendly option, but it still provides most of the features that you expect from a front mounted torpedo position hydration system. So long as you do not crash or have to ride over rougher terrain, the Wiel should work out wonderfully. Still, the Torpedo Versa 200 makes room in an already crowded market by providing pretty much everything that the Torpedo Versa 500 does at a lower cost. Give and Take Taking these results into account, it would actually be much faster for Jess to carry two 500ml bottles on the bike, placing one between her arms and one behind the saddle, as this would only create a 1.9w (40kph) / 0.8w (30kph) total penalty, compared with behind the saddle for the 900ml bottle which was 2.5w (40kph and 1.1w (30kph) slower.

Wiel is likely a company not too many triathlon racers are familiar with in part because it is a fairly new company and also because they specialize in mountain biking products. With the Mini Wing 105, this design combined with its other features makes this the best dual rear mount we came across, though it does come with some caveats not often seen with XLAB hydration systems. Up and Down

When it comes to frame mounted aero water bottle, XLAB once again takes our top spot, though the competition is a bit more fierce. Example of Elite Chrono aero water bottle and cage system How many watts does an aero water bottle save? Remember, they will likely be using a fueling system as well, so it is more important that your hydration system feel as comfortable and natural as possible. While technically there are three primary mounts, the front mount actually has two different sub-mounts. Because of how long a triathlon takes to run, it is unlikely that the small amounts of time and energy used on one type or the minor annoyances of another type will cost you the race. Instead, and due to the endurance nature of a triathlon race, it is far more important that the bike fueling system feel as comfortable and natural as possible, even if that means taking a bit more time than you otherwise might.
